Take Your Best Shot: Essential Tips & Tricks for Shooting Amazing Photos

Taking amazing pictures is getting easier and easier with the advances in digital photography. In "Take Your Best Shot," the first book in this series with Popular Photography, our expert writers and photographers showed how to capture amazing images in the moment, and how to set up a breath-taking shot.
This book takes image-making to the next level, showing how to create a wide range of photo effects, from the subtle (adjusting the color in a picture to create a different mood) to the artistic (compositions merging several photos to dramatic effect) to the downright amazing (how to photograph yourself levitating . . . it's easier than you think!)
Competition titles either treat image-manipulation and trick shots as an afterthought, or concentrate solely on specific software products and techniques. This book does nothing but show such insider hints--and proves that you don't have to be a Photoshop whiz--or even own Photoshop--to pull off the fantastic feats in this book.
Set-ups and techniques are described in detail, with easy-to-understand illustrations and diagrams, and a wealth of beautifully inspirational photography. Beginners will learn ways to quickly move into new realms of expertise, and even old pros will pick up some new tricks. Anyone who has ever looked at an amazing composition or a skillful composite and said, "How did they do that?" will find this book irresistible.

Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane

The life of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (15711610), writes British art critic Graham-Dixon in this masterful biography, was like his art: "a series of lightning flashes in the darkest of nights." Graham-Dixon's briskly and elegantly composed study thoroughly contextualizing the artist's early life in the town of Caravaggio and in Milan, a city dominated by Archbishop Carlo Borromeo, whose fearsome doctrine of mass repentance and the selective role of visual spectacle influenced Caravaggio. By the time the artist left Milan for Rome, he had decided to become an artist. The author then chronicles Caravaggio's artistic success in Rome, where, at the age of 24, he found patronage by Cardinal del Monte. He created many masterpieces there, but the rejection of The Death of the Virgin by its ecclesiastical commissioners, the author argues, may have prompted Caravaggio to commit murder. He fled to Naples, then to Malta; he died at age 38, after a troubled and "disordered" life. That Graham-Dixon (Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel) took a decade to research and write this insightful and fascinating book shows in the depth of its research, the skillfulness of its historical and artistic analysis, and the deft fluidity with which it is expressed. This is a rare tour-de-force.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

"The exhibition, organized by The Costume Institute, will celebrate the late Alexander McQueen's extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final runway presentation which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion. Approximately one hundred examples will be on view, including signature designs such as the bumster trouser, the kimono jacket, and the Origami frock coat, as well as pieces reflecting the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s that he crafted into contemporary silhouettes transmitting romantic narratives. Technical ingenuity imbued his designs with an innovative sensibility that kept him at fashion's vanguard." -- MMA website.

An American Experiment: George Bellows and the Ashcan Painters

In the first decades of the 20th century, George Bellows and other painters of the Ashcan School, a loosely connected group of gritty, urban realists, created images of the city from street level. Following older artist Robert Henri's insistence that artists should make "pictures from life," the Ashcanners renounced the polished academic style taught in art schools of the time. Instead they practiced a more urgent manner working with bold, highly saturated color, seeking to catch the ebb and flow of life in urban America. Some of them, particularly Bellows, also produced vivid landscapes and portraits.
This book introduces the artists of the Ashcan School and the key characteristics and themes of their work. Detailed commentaries are provided for twelve significant paintings by George Bellows, William Glackens, Robert Henri, George Luks, and John Sloan, ranging from depictions of the metropolitan throng to Bellows's vivid seascapes. In their visual contemplation of early-20th-century America, these artists offer deep insights into the nature of ordinary life not only in their time but also in our own.

All about Techniques in Calligraphy: An Indispensable Manual for Artists and Hobbyists

Like others in the All about Techniques series, this book packs a lot of information into a very attractive package. Captioned photos and diagrams and blocks of concise text work beautifully together to introduce a wealth of information on the lettering art. An overview of writing and alphabets as they evolved in a few key areas around the globe precedes information on calligraphy materials, tools, and techniques. There are chapters on composition and design as well, along with step-by-step demonstrations of letter construction and generously sized samples, perfect for copying, of Gothic, Humanistic, Carolingian, Chancellery, and other scripts. The final sections of the book comprise an idea gallery that links the lettering to modern design opportunities. Unlike Annie Cicales The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering (2004), this book includes no projects but is, nonetheless, a first-rate introduction to hand-lettering, from practice to perfection. "This thoughtful take on comic art by Brunetti, whose work has appeared in "McSweeney's" and "The New Yorker", is the condensed version of a course the author teaches on the art of cartooning. He presents a series of assignments designed to help readers express themselves eloquently in words and pictures. One especially clever exercise walks readers through the process of distilling a complete story into a one-panel comic strip using J.D. Salinger's classic "The Catcher in the Rye" as an example. Julius Shulman: The Last Decade

Julius Shulman (1910-2009), one of the foremost architectural photographers of our day, achieved international acclaim with his pictures of the architecture of the postwar and Kennedy eras. Shulman not only set standards in modern architectural photography, working with the preeminent architects of his time, he also defined a completely new style of architectural photography. Shulman elevates architectural photography above the slavish illustration of architectural history to become a pictorial medium in its own right, with far-reaching functions going beyond representation.
German born photographer Jurgen Nogai and Julius Shulman began a rewarding collaboration in 2000 which lasted almost a decade until Shulman's death in 2009. Together they continued to develop their unique style, worked on projects, and published in books and magazines. Nogai's work is part of the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Palm Springs Art Museum and Deutsches Architektur Museum, the Frankfurt Design and Architecture Museum, Germany.
This publication is released on the occasion of Julius Shulman's one hundredth birthday and presents works from the joint archive of Shulman and Nogai resulting from their ten year partnership, many of them published for the first time in a book.

Chihuly: Through the Looking Glass

Arguably the most famous glass artist since Louis Comfort Tiffany, Dale Chihuly has been credited with elevating blown glass from delicate decorative object to groundbreaking fine art. Chihuly's "Blanket Cylinders," "Seaforms," "Persians" and chandeliers are exhibited and collected throughout the world, and many volumes have been devoted to his bold, complex, fiercely colorful work. Little documented, however, though crucial to an understanding of his art, is the role played by physical space in his overall aesthetic--installation spaces, work spaces, but also spaces for living and for housing his extensive personal collections. "Chihuly: Through the Looking Glass" focuses on the artist's pieces and installations in relation to the spaces that generate, shape and surround them. The text, a mix of critical exegesis and Chihuly's own commentary (much of it solicited specifically for this book), provides a new entree into the work, mind, and creative process of one of America's most critically and popularly acclaimed artists

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School

"101 Things" de-mythologizes the jargon that obscures the real meanings of what is taught in design schools. Designers too often write in obtuse terms that make relatively simple concepts difficult to comprehend. But understanding how we perceive, experience, and interpret the spaces we inhabit should not make us feel dumb, or left out. This readable and graphically clear book is a great introduction to design terms, principles, and concepts. Anyone interested in design will learn much from this terrific book." --Theodore C. Dale Chihuly: A Celebration

The appeal of this book lies in the color photographs displaying the originality of color and form in the work of glass artist Chihuly. This companion book to an exhibition celebrating his 70th birthday focuses on how his family, his hometown of Tacoma, Wash., and the Pacific Northwest have informed his career. Chihuly's mother fostered his fascination with color and form through the complex colors and forms in her flower gardens and her love of sunsets. His thinking about gardens certainly inspired Chihuly's Ikebana and Mille Fiori series. Tacoma's frontier mentality, observes Tacoma Art Museum curator Hushka, drives Chihuly's experimentation with scale, texture, color, forms, and thinness (which is technically difficult) free of the conventions of both the East Coast and European conventions. The abundance of water and rain in the Puget Sound area is a major influence on Chihuly, who also explored the frozen state of water in his Icicle Creek Chandelier and other installations. A lifelong interest in Native American culture and imagery profoundly influenced his Baskets, Cylinders, and Soft Cylinders series, which keenly pay tribute to the Indian crafts of basket and blanket weaving. This intimate, thoughtful celebration highlights the influences of nature and nurture on a unique talent, but the book's regional feel and small scale of its photographs likely preclude a wider audience

Ai Weiwei: Architecture

Ai Weiwei, born in the Socialist People's Republic of China, is one of the most important artists of the present global art scene. Taken under house detention for his provocative political opinion,  he planned a celebration for the official governmental demolition of his Studio. His creations are based on the idea of provoking discussion about their content. For example, he spread about 150 tons of porcelain sunflower seeds on the floor of the Tate Modern in London to remind young Chinese people of propagandist pictures which show Mao Tse-Tung in the middle of sunshine and sunflower seeds. The daab-book embraces some of the astonishing works of the exceptional artist.

Digital Landscape Photography: In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams and the Great Masters

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was a pioneer of landscape photography, whose imagery-especially his iconic views of the American National Parks--is widely published and instantly recognizable. While he is undoubtedly one of the best-loved and best-known visionaries of American art, photographers also recognize him as a pioneer of technique, a theoretician, and as one of the great teachers of the craft of photography.
His zone system has been widely adapted, but Adams unique imagery also relied on his determination and application at every stage of the photographic process; he spent years in his darkroom, as well as out in the open air. For decades, this kind of attention to detail required the kind of equipment, time, and facilities that were out of the reach of most photographers--but now, in the digital age, technology has finally made his techniques accessible.
This book will show you what can be learned from Adams working process, and how these lessons can be applied today. The craft of Adams photography is discussed, and the ZONE SYSTEM is related to the digital age. Sections on light, composition, mood, and the darkroom all show what can be achieved today using and understanding his thinking. Michael Frye's own photography provides many stunning examples of the results that can be achieved and, as one of Adams' natural successors in the field, he is well placed to analyze the inspirational shots which open each chapter.

Glories of the Hudson: Frederic Edwin Church's Views from Olana

In 1609, Henry Hudson sailed up the river that now bears his name. The exhibition and its accompanying publication Glories of the Hudson: Frederic Edwin Church's Views from Olana mark the quadricentennial of his discovery by highlighting Frederic Church's sketches of the prospect from his hilltop home overlooking the river. Church made his first sketch of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains from Red Hill—the south end of the property that became his home, Olana—in 1845, on a sketching expedition suggested by his teacher Thomas Cole. Returning to the Hudson Valley in 1860 as the nation's most famous and best-paid artist, Church settled on a farm on the lower slope of the Sienghenbergh, securing for himself and his new wife a splendid vantage point for studying, sketching, and painting the river.

Church continued to add land to his property, attaining new and varied vistas of the river, and crowned the estate with a Persian-inspired house designed to frame splendid views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. Church never tired of his views of the river, documenting his passion for the Hudson in paintings, oil sketches, and drawings. From Olana, he observed the transformations wrought by the changing seasons, weather, and light, capturing chilly winter snows, brilliant sunsets, and passing storms in sketches executed with a few brushstrokes or autumn colors and clear winter light in more finished easel paintings. The best of these are reproduced here, in eighty-three illustrations, sixty-nine in full color, some of them published for the first time. The essay by Evelyn D. Trebilcock and Valerie A. Balint, the introduction by Kenneth John Myers, and the foreword by John K. Howat together provide an absorbing narrative of the development of the Hudson River School and its most successful artist. With its emphasis on social reform and simplicity in design---bold lines, honest use of materials, and redeeming qualities of handmade goods---the Arts and Crafts movement offered an antidote to the perceived ills of a rapidly changing world and the ornate and artificial Victorian aesthetic of the late 19th century. In the first years of the 20th century, the movement was popularized in the United States through the efforts of Gustav Stickley (1858 – 1942), a businessman who promoted a progressive American style and the ideal of the simple life through the efforts of his furniture factory and publication, The Craftsman.

Dinka: Legendary Cattle Keepers of Sudan

This seminal volume on the indigenous African Dinka group is a landmark documentation of a vanishing people in war-torn Sudan. World-renowned photographers Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith have devoted their lives to documenting the rapidly disappearing ceremonies and cultures of the indigenous people of Africa. In breathtakingly poignant images, they present a story that started with their first visit to the Dinka thirty years ago. Living in harmony with their cattle, the Dinka have survived years of war only to find their culture on the brink of vanishing forever. Where the White Nile River reaches Dinka country, it spills over 11,000 square miles of flood plain to form the Sudd, the largest swamp in the world. In the dry season, it provides abundant pasture for cattle, and this is where the Dinka set up their camps. The men dust their bodies and faces with gray ash—protection against flies and lethal malarial mosquitoes, but also considered a mark of beauty. Covered with this ash and up to 7’ 6" tall, the Dinka were referred to as "gentle" or "ghostly" giants by the early explorers. The Dinka call themselves "jieng" and "mony-jang," which means "men of men."

Points Between ... Up Till Now

This book for the first time assembles images from Polidori’s major photographic series Beirut, Versailles, Havanna, New Orleans and Pripyat and Chernobyl, giving an overall impression of his oeuvre.
Each of the series constitutes an experimental entity whose goal is to reveal something that no longer exists. They reflect a particular world of memory, the relation between present and past, and delve deep into subjects of profound historical significance. Juxtaposing human suffering, destruction and the magnificence born of man’s imagination, these many-layered images provoke highly emotional reactions. In his soundings of reality, the artist creates a theatre of absence, of commemoration. (Steidl)

Kodachromes

William Christenberry: Kodachromes is the first publication to showcase the artist's stunning and previously unknown body of work produced with 35 mm Kodachrome slide film. Spanning from 1964 to 2007, only a small number of the images have ever been published or exhibited. As in all of Christenberry's photographs, the subject matter is the rural Deep South: the twisting back roads, open landscapes, rusted signage, and ramshackle vernacular architecture found in Hale County, Alabama where the artist was born and raised. Though many of the sites pictured in this rare collection are new, other subjects grew iconic in Christenberry's oeuvre as he has returned to photograph them for decades—the red building in the forest, Sprott Church, the Palmist Sign, and the Bar-B-Q Inn, among others. However, the photographs in William Christenberry: Kodachromes, made with a camera that allowed for greater mobility, reveal new ways of considering Christenberry's perennial subjects and offer further insight into the working method of this venerable artist. With the recent discontinuation of Kodachrome film by Kodak, the work in this beautiful volume is rendered even more meaningful. (Aperture)

Walker Evans: Decade by Decade

Walker Evans's reputation was initially established by his Depression-era collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. That tribute to Southern sharecropper families, as well as Evans's work for the Farm Security Administration, had a profound influence on later artists. However, from the 1940s through the 1960s his celebrity underwent a long dry spell during a commercial association with Fortune magazine, and it was only after the Evans partisan John Szarkowski succeeded Edward Steichen at the photography department of New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1961 that he was rehabilitated among the artistic cognoscenti. His 1930s and post-1960 photos remain those for which he is best known. In his latest book, Crump (Starburst: Color Photography in America 1970–1980) addresses Evans's entire oeuvre, making a decisive case that a cohesive visual unity runs throughout. Many of the 216 photos featured here were taken from the Fortune archive, others from earlier series (such as a 1933 trip to Cuba); all enliven the pages. Crump opens the monograph with an engrossing biographical account of the Evans-Szarkowski association, propelling his central point of Evans's qualitative consistency.(Library Journal)

Without talking down to anyone, or talking over anyone's head, Barnbaum presents "how to" techniques for both traditional and digital approaches. Yet he goes well beyond the technical, as he delves deeply into the philosophical, expressive, and creative aspects of photography so often avoided in other books.

Bruce Barnbaum is recognized as one of the world's finest landscape and architectural photographers, and for decades has been considered one of the best instructors in the field of photography. This latest incarnation of his textbook, which has evolved, grown, and been refined over the past 35 years, will prove to be an ongoing, invaluable photographic reference for years to come. It is truly the resource of choice for the thinking photographer.(Ingram)
